I wrote six fics for Yuletide this year, from average to completely unpopular, and received one.
My Gift
FANDOM: The Blue Castle - L.M. Montgomery
TITLE: Something Frivolous And FineCHARACTERS: Barney Snaith, Valancy Stirling
SUMMARY: Barney heeds Valancy's request for something frivolous for Christmas.
MY THOUGHTS: I asked for something on Barney's thoughts on Valancy through the book and this did a beautiful, beautiful job of it. There's a bunch of (read: more than one) Blue Castle fic in Yuletide and Yuletide Madness this year, so if that's your fandom, run over and check it out!
AssignmentFANDOM: Discword - Terry Pratchett
TITLE: Interview With A VetinariCHARACTERS: Vimes, Vetinari, Lady Sibyl Ramkin, Susan Sto Helit
SUMMARY: On the matter of education for young Samuel Vimes.
MY THOUGHTS: My most popular YT fic this year. (That's not saying much.) It took forever, and I kind of wanted to write more of it, where Susan continued to governess for young Samuel (and Lobsang was 'her young man') and Vimes got suspicious about her and eventually worked out that she wasn't quite human, but I ran out of time. As it was, I posted this just in time for the deadline and only just finished editing it before the archive opened. ("Now, with bonus footnotes!")
Pinch HitsFANDOM: Psy-Changelings - Nalini Singh
TITLE: And A Little Cub Shall Lead ThemCHARACTERS: Judd Lauren, Ben Stone, Mercy Smith, Kaleb Krychek, Sahara Kyriakus
SUMMARY: Innocent children. Dangerous men. And the rigours of babysitting.
MY THOUGHTS: I'm not entirely certain that Kaleb would do this (turn up in SnowDancer/DarkRiver territory without announcing) simply because I'm not 100% the Changelings wouldn't take offence to it. This one waswell-received by a lot of people, probably because it featured the 'murder bros' - Judd and Kaleb - and copious amounts of cute. I may have inadvertantly written Ben younger than he is in the series.
FANDOM: Exiles - Melanie Rawn
TITLE: Love And Letting GoCHARACTERS: Sarra Ambrai, Cailet Ambrai
SUMMARY: It's not the first time she's let her daughter go.
MY THOUGHTS: An emergency pinch-hit I picked up, and which I think worked rather nicely in a mothers/daughters angle, with Sarra&Taigan, Cailet&her daughter, and Maichen Ambrai shadowy in the background. I may have judiciously translated some of the scenarios depicted in the fanfic duology Ms. Rawn wrote a long time ago in a fandom far far away, off which the Exiles trilogy was based. :)
Madness treatsFANDOM: Terminator movies (Terminator 3)
TITLE: No ComfortCHARACTERS: Kate Brewster, John Connor
SUMMARY: Later, lying in the dark with the weight of a mountain above her, Kate wonders if she should resent that he didn't try to be kind.
MY THOUGHTS: I picked this because I like the canon and I like the character of Kate and her relationship with John. The exact manner of their relationship was difficult post-movie, because Kate was living and affianced to Scott up to the morning of Judgement Day, and I don't imagin it was an arranged marriage! So she's not just going to fall into bed with John, regardless of Kripke's basement or their predicted future. I think it turned out pretty okay.
FANDOM: Psy-Changelings - Nalini Singh
TITLE: The Sense Of Coming HomeCHARACTERS: Naya Hunter, Julian Ryder
SUMMARY: The thing about coming home is that...it's coming
home.
MY THOUGHTS: I kind of cheated with this one - it's the barest start of a futurefic that could possibly get epic. And not very good when you look at it comparatively with the Naya/Julian fics that were written for the main archive and are full-sized, well-developed, excellently-characterised stories. But I really wanted to write something that was about
love (like Adria and Riaz's story was) not about the mating bond. And this was going to be the start of it.
It might still be the start of it. We'll see.
FANDOM: Tokyo Crazy Paradise
TITLE: ChrysalisCHARACTERS: Kozuki Tsukasa, Shirogami Ryuji, Meiko
SUMMARY: This relationship unfolds beyond the customary parameters, and they and those around them must learn to adjust.
MY THOUGHTS: I've had this idea for a while, and the prompt gave me the impetus to write it. However, I think it's winning at 'least popular fic in Madness' - no comments, no kudos! All other fics in the archive have at least one or the other. (Admittedly, it's hampered by being a really really rare fandom - I think this fic is the first one on AO3,
however my recip has commented on her giftfic so that's a wee smidge demoralising.) I have three more chapters two of which are about 80% done, but the last one which is proving a little problematic. And the response isn't helping.
Ah well, luck of the year. Last year was a very good year for me in YT. This one, not so much.
Happy Yuletide, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year to all!
