Something about cats and their little paws stretched out, and their little chins resting on something. I don't know what it is. But it's absolutely adorable!

I just want to make cake.

I'd like one slice of cake, maybe two. Maybe one for now, one slice for later, and then another frozen for much later?

Layer cake. With buttercream filling and frosting. I'm currently watching a lot of Sugarologie's videos:

I might be slightly in love with the way she pipes icing. Even piping the icing on my sister's cupcakes on the weekend gave my hands cramps. (My hand strength is getting worse these days.)

Anyway, cake.

--

TW: diet culture )

Food-related: B1 wants me to go through the deep-freezer and do a stocktake of what we actually have in there. I think we have some meat bones that are perhaps old and need to be boiled up for stock. (Which at least can keep for another 6 months.)

--

Went to breakfast with SB1, SSIL1 and the nephlet (10mo) and it was good. The food was ordinary but it was good to chat with them and see the nephlet, because they live in western Europe and seeing them is Not The Easiest Thing. They're going back next week, but I'll visit them in December when I'm in western Europe.

--

I'm a little worried about Smokey - while both she and Mal are getting old (coming up to 11 years), she's always been a bit more delicate than Mal. More tummy troubles with attendant issues at either end. And she's getting old and vocal. Some odd noises this morning, but once she'd done her biz, evicted a hairball, drank, ate, and done some more biz, she seemed okay...

*sigh*

Dara the cat was put to sleep this morning, UK time. (Saturday PM in Australia.)

Dara

She was 19 years old, ancient and beloved, a grand old dame of cats in stately black and white. Petted and fussed over, with nothing too good for her as she grew old and arthritic and crotchety.

This was a cat with absolute chill. She took foreign beasts and vet visits with cool lassaiz-faire, and would sit on the back ledge of the stepdad's car as he drove her to the vet, surveying the traffic with interest.

We once piled cookbooks on her, and she just lay there - the ultimate 'dolly-cat' - and stared at us when they came off as though to ask "what was all that about"? She was known to have a certain feline cunning when food or favoured seating places were an option: once, she chased her companion, Kira, off the most comfy seat in the house by licking her until Kira couldn't take it anymore and moved. Then Dara came and seated herself on the already-warmed space.

She had a distinctive yowl - not plaintive, but a demand. "Where's my food?" Or "where's my pats?" "What are you doing?" She enjoyed scritches around the ruff of her neck, and would sometimes lick your fingers, but hated what my sisters and I call the "kiss onna head".

The stepdad doted on her in myriad ways, although she was technically my stepbrother's cat. But when A moved out, Dara stayed, and the stepdad took her on and became her favourite person. He'll probably miss her most, although we'll all find ourselves pausing a moment to look for the familiar black-and-white lump parked in the middle of the floor, as though she has every right to be there.

RIP Dara. You were unflappable and we loved you.

Saturday, I fixed up the espalier frame for my two apples.

Sunday, I met up with a couple of the hockey committee to sort out gifts for Presentation Night on Saturday, vaccuumed the house, mopped the kitchen and dining, then went into my study and finished the top for of the C4quilts, took photos of it and another quilt I'd done a while back, came back in, sat down with a book...and tw: blood and pets )

Came home, ate the Mexican ribs I put together and shoved in the oven before taking Mal to the vet (B2 had come over so she kept and eye on it) with some packet macaroni cheese (it wasn't terrible), and an avocado that I probably could have turned into a salsa-ish kind of thing if I'd had any energy.

Might try to make some coriander lime rice (may need to ask the neighbours for some limes if available). Need to either start trading or using that coriander...

Also have to fry up the chicken livers I defrosted. Garlic and soy sauce/ricewine glazed. Maybe make a pate out of it?

--

Tomorrow I have the funeral for one of my hockey team. She had cancer a couple of years ago, thought she'd beaten it back and started off the season strong, then relapsed. She died last Saturday. She was a character and a half, and we're going to miss her around the club, as well as in the goals.

Smokey is decidedly unhappy.

We were given two cones of shame, a soft one and a hard one. The soft one was supposed to see if it would deter her, but she was determined, and after nearly a day of things looking okay and healing over...she licked it raw again. Ugh.

So we've put the hard cone on her. Behind the soft one, because she'll endure the hard one behind the soft one, but if we take the soft one away she just tries to back out of the hard one, and that's all she does.

So far, the hard cone is working to keep her from licking her hindquarters, but it makes her eating and going to the toilet an absolute PITA. But we'll have to endure, at least until the weekend.

It's going to be a very long week.

Last night, around 8pm, I noticed Smokey was licking her butt rather more frequently than she usually does.

A quick inspection showed a raw patch near her rear end with what looked like a very swollen bit beneath the skin. I made a super-swift decision to take her up to the Vet Hospital, about 15 minutes away.

As usual, getting her into the cage produced a wildcat. Smokey hates the vet, hates the cage, and she has a fine-tuned feeling for when Bad Things Are About To Happen. She brings out The Back-Throat Whine (the one that you hear cats challenging each other with out in the night) and hisses and spits and turns nasty.

We got her into the cage with a towel and I drove her out to the vet hospital with much plaintive yowling on her part and a lot of, "I know, I'm sorry," from me.

It turns out she had a swollen/inflamed anal gland; it came up in about a day, and would have burst in another day. She stayed overnight at the hospital and they cleared out the gland, gave her painkillers and antibiotics, and I picked her up this morning.

The bill was not pretty, but apparently cheaper than the ones that the parentals pay for Dara. Still, I can afford it, and we love our kitteh.

Apparently, Smokey's ability to go from 0 to 100 in 0.5 seconds flat surprised many a vet and vet assistant last night, all of whom thought she was so docile and easygoing. Yeah, approach her and find out otherwise! The vet was called Matt and had an American accent, and was very sweet about staying to make sure that she was handed over to me, instead of relinquishing her to a vet who wasn't prepared for Smokey and her...uniqueness.

She's back home now, and settling okay. Shaved in a few sections - they had to sedate her to sort her out because of her hatred of vets - but with an appetite and apparently okay. Lots of fussing for her. Including right now when I finish this post.

But I'm soooooo tired. I was right about to go to early bed when I noticed the raw patch over the swelling, and after that there was no question of going to bed. Then I had stuff happening pretty much all day today, which wrecked me, and a story to actually write for [community profile] fffc because I've been writing longer stories all week (yes, plural) and couldn't actually finish them. *bleh*

Did I mention I was tired? I'm going now. Shower, then snuggle, then bed.

Smokey has been more energetic the last couple of days. Sunday vet diagnosed her condition as 'gastritis' and we have been feeding her 'sensitive food' (or trying to).

After eating very little on Sunday, she ate almost nothing on Monday, drank a little water but not much.

This mid-morning (Tuesday), she had 3 pc of the sensitive food and 1 of the regular, drank some water around shortly after.

I called our vet (not the Sunday one) got some anti-nausea / appetite stimulate medication from the regular vet today, and she recommended some chicken breast. So, ofc I go and buy a quarter chicken from the BBQ shop. Because I am a cat owner and all cat owners will perfectly understand this.

SHE ATE!

*parades and brass bands and fireworks*

Just a cubic inch of chicken breast, maybe - might even have been half a cubic inch, but that was more than she has for the last few days and she seemed pretty happy about eating. She is now snoozing in the sun.

So we shall work to tempt her with more chicken breast tonight, and if she won't then she'll get the anti-nausea and appetite stimulant. If she goes back to normal by the end of the week, then we'll put it down to a momentary gastritis.

If she doesn't get back into the swing of eating again...it may be time for the blood tests. Did I mention Smokey doesn't do the vet well? Because she doesn't. *sigh* That's not even counting the expense.

Ah well, cross that bridge when we come to it.

Smokey isn't feeling well. She vomited five times on Friday - first two were normal with food, last three were mostly liquid.

She didn't eat anything that night, just went to bed.

Saturday, she barely ate again, although we tempted her with cat treats in the afternoon, drank a little

Today, she's not eating again - cat treats, some water, but otherwise not hungry.

B1 took her to the vet (on a Sunday), they checked her over, palpated her stomach and said she probably has a furball irritating her stomach. They gave her an anti-nausea shot and said she'll probably want something to eat tonight, but when she got home, she was hungry.

Vet visit went pretty well, Smokes is not in the habit of doing vets very well - the usual vet occasions yowling and 'cuss words' and all kind of crossness, but because this was a new vet - one that's open on a Sunday - she was better behaved. Didn't freak out quite as fast or as much. *sigh*

Anyway, she's now sitting in the sun seemingly quite happy. Hopefully whatever was annoying her stomach will have passed in the next 24 hours and she'll be all right again. After the chooks, I'm very nervous about household pets.

Mal was eating again around midday. Not as much as she usually does, but still, eating. She ate some more at 1:30 when I got home, but I took her to the vet anyway, just in case.

Nothing untoward, so far as they could tell.

They checked her, palpated her, gave her an antacid tablet, and put some liquids in her. She's walking normally, no pain in her stomach, just off her food and was vomiting bile for a day.

So I'll keep an eye on her over the weekend and we'll see come Monday.

So I can take the car in to be assessed for prang-ness.

So far I have:
- fed the chooks
- reboiled the chicken stock
- eaten breakfast (half of yesterday's lunch leftovers plus a fried egg)
- washed the dishes
- put on a load of washing
- moved a program from our Dev system to our Test system

Still to do:
- put lamb in slow cooker for dinner/meals over the next few days
- move chooks out to the front for foraging
- hang out washing
- put on another load of washing
- take car to assessor
- measure out chicken stock and freeze for soups

The cats have not bothered me much yet, and when Mal yowled at the door I was able to take her into B1's room for snuggles, but now that B1 has gone off to do...things, there will be more bothering.

ETA: even as I write this, Mal has just started yowling at the door.

Somewhat worryingly, the cats have been at each other a lot more. They're about 6 years old at this point and while they deal okay with each other, they're not as friendly as they used to be - a lot more blank stares and swiping at each other... Also, cut for feline bodily functions )

Here, have a quilt:

--

Have a rec:

series: Get Ready For It
author: Philyra
fandom: MCU
characters: all of them, but the POV characters are Pepper, Maria, Natasha, Darcy, Skye, and Steve's mom (yes, you read that correctly).
premise: The characters of the MCU are all involved in an NHL hockey team - the New York Knights. Pepper's the owner, Maria is the first female player in the NHL, Natasha defects from Russia, Darcy is the PR handler, Skye is an employee of Stark Hockey Technology, and Steve's mom is a nurse and enthusiastic supporter of the team. Most of the MCU characters introduced up until AoU make an appearance, although the focus is on the women in the organisation and the players on the team.

--

Have a snippet of fic:

probably defunct given current rewrite )

--

Have some pet pics!

all the animal sisters )

--

I'd post the amazingly postcard-y pic that I took of the Opera House on Friday morning as we sailed into Sydney Harbour, but I don't have it available to link to from LJ.

*hugs*

Because kitteh!

Cats

Maladicta is giving you the soulful look to click on the cut... )

We've been having lots of afternoon naps lately. By 2pm, I'm pretty much bushed after waking up at 5:30 to deal with the chooks, and a lie-down of about 20-30 minutes is a nice relief.

It's midnight and I am seriously HUNGRY.

[livejournal.com profile] adafrog: How about your thoughts on pets?

Pets are a responsibility and a pleasure. I mention the responsibility first because they're a lifetime committment - the lifetime of the pet. Yes, circumstances change and sometimes you have to give up a pet for reasons, but when you take an animal into your family it should be with the firm intent and willingness to give it a Forever Home.

I never needed this explained to me )

Mal's gone to the vet for The Operation. No whining and writhing for Mal!

Smokey is not so fortunate. We have to wait until she's out of heat before we can get her desexed.

In the meantime, she's practising her "I can kill you with my brain" look. It's quite impressive, actually...

My cat, the mafia boss.
Smokey the Mafia boss

Although right now, she's sitting on the laundry basket taking a nap. Way to debunk the Mafia boss image...

Remember the cats we were guesting at the start of the summer? Charlie the burmese lilac point and Crosbie the burmese chocolate point?

They were lazy, comfortable gentleman who liked their snoozes and their food - as elderly gentlemen do.

They were adorable and quite friendly, although Charlie was in failing health and needed medication the entire time they stayed with us.

We just received news last night that Charlie died on Friday.

RIP Charlie. You were such a quietly refined gentleman and you will be missed.

After being here just on a week, they seem to be settling in nicely.

If there were Olympic categories of sheer cyootness, I think these guys would win hands down!

snuggle kittehs

the most adorable cats in the world (don't all owners say this?) )

Anyway, that's a rough of the last week in pics. It's been busy on the personal front...and deadly quiet on the job front. I'm thinking I might have to start taking up secretarial work again, although I'll start applying for those after I go talk with a few contracting companies to determine if they have any projects on hand in need of random programmers.

WE HAVE KITTEHNESS!

There's Maladicta a.k.a. "Mal":

And Smokey, a.k.a. "Smokey":

Apparently I got Smokey and Bandit mixed around - or possibly I was calling them one way and everyone else was calling them another!

But they're here, they're very active and utterly adorable!

On the other hand, we may not have any wool blankets left by the time they get out of the 'play with everything' phase. Mal has a penchant for chewing things - ribbon toys, catnip mice, cardboard box corners...and blankets.

It's okay, the blanket is an ugly lime green and we've had it for forever!

These two are going to be live wires, I think. Nyara was always quiet, even as a kitten, and she grew up into a quiet, introverted adult. But these two are definitely in play mode.

And uhoh, I think Mal is eyeing off my bookshelf. CRAAAAP.
