How the hell does anyone do this?

I joke that we have 'the hoarding gene' from both sides of the family, but it's not just B1 and her boxes of files and receipts from 5, 10, 15 years ago, it's me and "things that might yet be useful".

Also: bottles and bottles of stuff: cleaning things, glues, sprays, etc, much of it not-yet-used or half-used or unusued. And the issue is primarily that we don't have the space to store all this...

Lounges arrived and they are nice, but very large! I asked the cleaners to give them a once-over this morning and I'll do another clean with baking soda and TheAlso, I need to sort out the bookshelf issue in my study ASAP, because now I have a too-wide shelf that I don't need and must put on Marketplace or one of the local groups. Except that I need to find the hardware for it, which I haven't seen in weeks.

UGH.

It was a really good purchase too. But, yes, sorting and throwing out. Still so much to do.

Oh I struggled with that so much, "but I might be able to use this someday!" The only thing that I think really helped was moving across the country a few times and getting fed up with packing all the crap and unpacking it and having to pay for a bigger and bigger moving van.

Aha. Yes. That problem is a toughie, isn't it.

In my family, the trick is usually "have a trusted family member with no emotional connection to the stuff and less hoarding tendencies sit with you as you make decisions for an outside opinion." But that depends on having such a person willing and able to help ...

It really is.

I also struggle with the "someday I may use it". I have found Marie Kondo's spark joy method has worked well for most things. Stuff that holds a lot of emotion for me I leave for a while, usually a few months to years and come back when I have more emotional distance from it. Then I find it easier to get rid of things.

Slightly dated, but the Marie Kondo "does this spark joy" thing...really worked for me. I got rid of a LOT, because even the things I had a tremendous emotional response to (ie my university notes), I could have A Moment with before putting them in the recycling.

I try to do a little cluttering every year but it's super hard. and i just seem to end up with the same amount of stuff--if not more--the next year.

Ooof, I can definitely relate to how difficult this is. (I had some years when I literally kept saying "things are smarter than me", even if, like, they don't even have BRAINS - it was just the only way I could explain this problem and have it make sense.) You can do it tho! ♡ *cheers you on*
